> I have been eating Hayashi strawberries since I was a kid and when I became an adult, my grandmother and I would drive up to Arroyo Grande from Morro Bay and buy flats of berries to take back to her garage kitchen to hull and either freeze or make into jam. Hayashi is known by the locals (and when I say locals I mean people from the central valley as well) as being the BEST and the most generous in their berries. They always wrapped the baskets in white butcher paper and piled them high with berries almost as big as the palm of your hand. And not flavorless hollow berries either. These are the berries you just eat straight out of the basket, no sugar needed. My boyfriend and I recently went by and bought some Strawberries (1/2 flat $8) a full flat of jam berries (strawberries left over from the day before that were very ripe but still wonderful) a basket of cherries and a basket of Chinese snow peas. I only spent $23 on all of it! We ate at least a full basket of strawberries on the way home and I still had at least 10 FULL quart size freezer bags after I was done hulling all of them.My boyfriend gave a bunch of ours away, even to his sister who lives in Camarillo and swears by the organic berries over there. Now I'm going to have to go back and buy more.If you go to the Central Coast, don't stop ANYWHERE but Hayashi's for your strawberries. Easy access from the 101 or from Pismo...just go south on Hwy 1 til you see the stand out by itself. Then turn on Halcyon to get back to Grand Ave to take you back to the 101 or the 1.
